Sky Box Not Working

I Might Be Able To Help You With Some Of The Common Issue With Your Sky Box

First of all if your sky box is faulty maybe with problems like; no satellite signal, error messages, sound or picture problems, viewing card etc, i will try to help you with easy to follow notes.

  • The first thing we need to do is to switch off the power on the wall socket. Now that the power is off the next thing is to check all the cables at the back of the sky digi box is properly connected and no cables are losely connected.
  • The cable you should pay close attention to is the coaxial (coax) cable the one in the image below. This cable is connected to the back of your sky box indicating dish input,if you have sky+/sky+HD you should have two coax cables indicating dish input 1 and dish input 2 as in the image.

Look at the copper wire this is how it should be clean and straight not having contact with any other metal bits.

If the centre core wire is not looking clean and straight unscrew the (F Connector)or coaxial plug as the image above shows,if the wire is broken gently strip the cable and expose new fresh wire and rescrew the coaxial plug back on the cable.

  • The back of your sky box should have all cable well connected with no lose cables including the scart or HD cable.

  • Now we can take a look at the dish and make sure everything is connected nothing broken or loose. Please note always practice safety i recommend that only access your dish if its in a safe reachable place,if its too high and you are certain your dish might be faulty then have a professional sky engineer to come over.

  • Asume you have your dish at hand there are certain issue that might make your dish faulty.

Bad weather can cause the digi box to loose signal,if the F connectors are not waterproof Corrosion sets in and cause the system to malfunction.Another issue that might cause signal problems is the dish alignment. However, it never hurts to check dish alignment.

Check that the coaxial connector is clean and free from any corrosion. If there are signs of corrosion it is recommended that the LNB be replaced. When replacing the LNB be certain to seal against water using waterseal tape or equivalent.

Ensure connection to the coaxial cable is correct and tight.
  • Check the condition of the coaxial cable
  • no breaks or cracks in the outside cover.
  • no sharp bends.
  • no pinch points or flattened sections.
How To Align Your Satellite Dish
Clear the area of any obstacles. Objects must not interrupt the signal from the satellites to the dish. Remove any branches, bushes or other obstructions blocking the satellite dish, or move it to another place. The signal comes down at a 50-degree angle from the sky, so be certain to inspect the area within this space.

It's easy to align your satellite dish if you have a satellite finder as above, but if you don't have one don't worry it can still be done.

Align The Dish Without A Satellite Finder

Switch on your TV and the Sky box.

  • Press the Services Button on your Remote Control scroll right once to settings, Scroll down once to picture,Then scroll three times to the right to Signal.

You should have this image below

Have someone to help you, have him stay in front of the television to talk to you. They can inform you what the signal strength is by yelling to you, using a phone or walkie-talkie. If you do not have an assistant, you can either watch the signal (if you can see it from the dish), or you can go by the sound given off by the receiver. You will see the signal meter go up or hear the tone change as you zone in on a satellite.
Once the satellite dish is correctly set up it should be fairly easy. All you should have to do is face it to the southern sky and begin moving it very slowly in either direction (left or right). Once it picks up the satellite's signal, you will see (or hear) it.
Check the amount of the satellite signal. The higher the signal, the better chances you have of not losing it during bad weather. Try moving the dish slightly to improve the signal, if you are below 70 to 80. Once you have a high enough number, tighten all of the bolts and screws on the satellite dish.
Sky HD box freezes or stops responding

If your Sky HD box freezes or stops responding in anyway, the first thing to do isdisconnect it from the mains at the wall socket.

While disconnected remove your viewing card and wipe over
the gold circuit chip with a clean dry cloth.(Never use a wet cloth or one that has been used with cleaning products)

Then leave the box for at least 20 minutes to cool down and allow any residual voltage in the internal circuitry to dissipate.Plug the unit back in at the mains socket, switch on and wait for a few minutes.Switch on with your remote control and key in 101 for BBC1.
